Avalon Winter

The odd cold southerly and rug up, crystal clear air and water,
long cool shadows, clouds along the eastern horizon - time to reflect....

June/July 07 will be remembered for intense low pressure systems and huge south swells. The southern end of Avalon beach was almost completely washed away when this giant east north east swell saved the day......

For two days and two nights the waves flooded over the northern sandbanks. The entire ocean seemed to be slipping sideways, pushing thousands of tons of sand back down the beach. At the same time the rush of water past Avalon pool was like rapids in a fast moving river and surged out to sea, far beyond Little Avalon in the south.

For this amazing image, I sat beside Avalon tidal pool looking north to Indian Head and, for me at least, managed to capture the raw power and startling beauty of the ever changing ocean. And, speaking of changing, the photo below was taken from the same place, a month later, and shows the difference between a low preasure and high preasure system off the coast of Sydney.
