This breathtaking panorama takes in half the sky over Avalon and the amazing cloud formation is the prelude to Sydney's biggest wet in many years. Two hours later the squalls started, and over the next 24 hours 450mm of rain dumped on the catchments, to relieve one of the longest droughts on record. Drink up!

Standing there, with camera poised, taking in the immense scope of this landscape was giving me whiplash. It must have looked like I was watching a game of tennis. The scene is well outside 140º natural eye vision and the only way to fully appreciate what was going on is right here in front of you.

And there's more, it's not just the two dimensions of width and height that make this photograph, it's the use of visual links that tie the image together at different levels of depth. The bush and tilted tree branches on the left parallels the left section of the distant cloud bank. The headland and tree line on the right parallel the clouds on the right. This pulls the image together and perspective is accentuated by the convergence of the waves and rocks on the right and the clouds and beach on the far left. At full size, this shot won't let you go.
